How to Get Rid of Fleas on Dogs: Treatments That Work

To get rid of fleas on dogs, use a vet-recommended flea product on every pet in the home and treat the house at the same time. Fast-acting oral and topical products kill most fleas on a dog within about 12 hours, and older topical-only products within 12 to 36 hours. Because new fleas keep hatching from cocoons in carpets and bedding, keep treating monthly: clearing an infestation usually takes 2 to 3 months, and you may see a few fleas for up to 8 weeks. Baths and flea combs help, but they don’t stop the cycle on their own.

Signs Your Dog Has Fleas

  • Scratching, chewing or licking, especially at the base of the tail, back, belly and thighs
  • Black, pepper-like specks (flea dirt) in the coat that turn reddish brown on a wet paper towel
  • Fast-moving dark insects when you part the fur
  • Hair loss, red skin or scabs, often over the lower back
  • Rice-like segments near the tail or in bedding, a sign of tapeworms, which dogs get by swallowing fleas

Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva and itch badly from just a few bites. Flea allergy dermatitis is one of the most common skin problems in dogs, so see your vet if your dog is scratching constantly or has sores. To check for flea dirt, see the flea dirt test.

How to Get Rid of Fleas on Dogs, Step by Step

  1. Ask your vet which product suits your dog’s age, weight, health and lifestyle, and check the label for minimum age and weight, especially for puppies.
  2. Treat every dog and cat in the home on the same day with species-specific products. Never put a dog product on a cat.
  3. Comb and bathe if needed. A flea comb and a bath remove fleas and flea dirt for quick relief, but check the product label before bathing, since some topicals need a few days to spread.
  4. Treat the home: vacuum daily, wash your dog’s bedding hot every week, and use a household spray with an insect growth regulator. See how to get rid of fleas in your house.
  5. Treat shady yard spots where your dog rests, if fleas keep coming back. See flea treatment for your yard.
  6. Keep treating monthly year-round in warm climates so the cycle can’t restart.

Flea Treatment Safety for Dogs

  • Use the right product for your dog’s weight; don’t split doses or use a product for a bigger dog.
  • Watch for side effects such as vomiting, tremors, stumbling or seizures, and call your vet if they appear. In 2018 the FDA alerted owners and vets that isoxazoline products (such as Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica) have been linked to neurologic reactions in some animals, while still considering them safe and effective for most dogs.
  • Keep dogs treated with permethrin products away from cats until the product dries, and never use them on cats.
  • Avoid unproven or risky home remedies; see natural flea remedies.

FAQ

What kills fleas on dogs instantly?

Nothing is instant, but fast-acting oral products start killing fleas within hours. Nitenpyram tablets kill adult fleas on the dog quickly but last only about a day. A bath and flea comb remove fleas right away but don’t stop new ones.

How long does it take to get rid of fleas on a dog?

Fleas on the dog die within hours to a day or two after treatment, but clearing the home infestation usually takes 2 to 3 months. You may see a few fleas for up to 8 weeks as new ones hatch.

Can I use dish soap to get rid of fleas on my dog?

Dish soap drowns fleas during a bath, but it has no lasting effect and can dry out your dog’s skin. Use it only for a one-time wash, and treat with a proper flea product.

Why does my dog still have fleas after treatment?

Usually because fleas are still hatching from cocoons in the home, not every pet was treated, or the product was given late. Keep treating monthly and treat the house.

Can I use dog flea treatment on my cat?

No. Many dog flea products contain permethrin, which can kill cats. Use only products labeled for cats.
