This page explains how Pestbugs researches, writes, checks and updates its guides, so you can judge how much to rely on them.

Our goal

Give people dealing with a pest problem a fast, accurate answer they can act on: what the bug or bite is, whether it is dangerous, what works to get rid of it, and when to call a professional or a doctor.

Where our information comes from

We rely on primary and expert sources, in roughly this order of preference:

  1. University extension services and entomology departments, such as University of California IPM, University of Minnesota, University of Kentucky, Penn State and University of Florida IFAS
  2. Government agencies, such as the US EPA and CDC
  3. Medical and veterinary references, such as the Merck Manuals, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Dermatology
  4. Peer-reviewed research where it answers a specific question
  5. Industry bodies and published cost guides, such as the National Pest Management Association, Angi and HomeGuide, for pest control methods and prices

We avoid relying on forums, unsourced blogs or product marketing for facts. Every article lists its main sources at the end.

How we write

  • We answer the question in the first lines, then explain.
  • We use plain English and define technical terms.
  • We say clearly when a popular remedy doesn’t work or isn’t safe.
  • We give cost ranges with the year and source, because prices vary by location.
  • We don’t claim to have tested products unless an article says so and explains how.

Health and safety content

Articles about bites, rashes, stings and pest-related health questions are based on medical sources and include clear signs for when to see a doctor or vet. They are general information, not a diagnosis. We never recommend unsafe treatments, such as flammable liquids, mothballs or improvised pesticide mixtures.

Fact-checking

Before an article is published or significantly updated, its facts, figures and safety advice are checked against the cited sources. Numbers such as sizes, temperatures, timelines and costs must match a named source. Software tools, including AI writing assistants, may be used to help research, draft and edit, but nothing is published without being checked against the sources listed in the article.

Updates and corrections

  • We review our most-read guides regularly and update them when research, products, regulations or prices change.
  • Updated articles show the date of the latest update. We don’t change dates without changing content.
  • If you find an error, email [email protected]. We review every report and correct mistakes promptly.

Advertising and affiliate links

Pestbugs is funded by display advertising, served through Ezoic, and by affiliate links, including Amazon Associates. As an Amazon Associate, Pestbugs earns from qualifying purchases. Advertisers and retailers don’t see articles before publication and have no influence on what we write. Affiliate links are marked, and we only suggest product types that our sources support.

Independence

Pestbugs is independently owned and edited. We don’t accept payment for coverage, positive reviews or links.
